What is the Devanagari Script?

Origin & Etymology

Devanagari literally means "script of the city of gods" (देव = gods, नागरी = urban/city). It descends from the ancient Brahmi script (5th century BCE) via the Gupta and Nagari scripts. By the 11th century CE, it had crystallised into its modern form.

The Alphabet

Devanagari has 13 vowels (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, अं, अः) and 33 consonants (क to ज्ञ). Marathi adds one unique consonant not used in Hindi: ळ (retroflex L).

Conjuncts (जोडाक्षरे)

When two consonants combine without a vowel between them, they form a conjunct (ligature). Examples:

• क्ष = क + ष (कर्म → karma)
• त्र = त + र (राष्ट्र → rāshtra)
• ज्ञ = ज + ञ (ज्ञान → gyān)
• श्र = श + र (श्री → shrī)

Over 1,000 conjuncts exist in common Marathi. A good Marathi Unicode font renders all of them correctly.

Vowel Signs (मात्रा)

When a vowel attaches to a consonant, it becomes a matra (vowel sign). For example, क (ka) + ि = कि (ki). Matras can appear above, below, before, or after the consonant — this makes Devanagari typography more complex than Latin.

The Shirorekha (शिरोरेखा)

The horizontal bar across the top of most Devanagari letters is the shirorekha ("head line"). It visually ties words together. Different fonts render the shirorekha with varying thickness — a key stylistic choice.

Numerals

Devanagari has its own digits: ० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९. These are optional in modern Marathi — Latin digits (0-9) are far more common in daily use.

Typographic Principles

• Horizontal baseline is the shirorekha, not the bottom like Latin.
• Ascenders (above shirorekha) and descenders (below baseline) follow strict conventions.
• Line spacing should be at least 1.4× font size to accommodate vowel signs + conjunct stacks.
• Font size for body text: 14pt minimum on print, 16px on web — smaller makes conjuncts illegible.
